You can be, do, or have anything you choose in life! You can choose to think positively or to think negatively, to either fall victim to circumstance or to become a victor and take control of your life. Really, the choice is up to you.
I’m living proof that the mind creates miracles for those who believe. In June of 1995, I contracted the life threatening illness Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which completely paralyzed my entire body. I was hooked to many machines and couldn’t even smile or swallow my own saliva. At that point, I made an important choice not to think of myself as being sick. I chose to be positive, chose to be grateful for being alive and for having so many wonderful people supporting me. During my illness, I combined visualization techniques and listening to music with faith, determination, and family support to help me become the fastest recovering GBS patient (with the severity of my illness) to ever leave the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre.
I was completely focused on being 100% healthy and walking across a stage with a microphone in my hand, singing motivational songs with my sister, Maria. I was so focused, in fact, that I not only achieved my goal, but achieved it in record timing – relearning to walk in just over two months when I was told it would take two years. I did this by choosing to focus on being healed as opposed to falling victim to my illness.
At this time, my doctors had taken to calling me the “Miracle Child” because of my quick and unexplained heal rate. At one point, I had actually become cross-eyed with double vision. The doctors covered my eyes with a patch that they alternated every two hours, hoping it would help strengthen my eyes and fix my vision. Eventually, I was sent to a specialist with the warning that I may have to wear “coke-bottle” glasses for the rest of my life.
The night before I went to the specialist, I prayed and visualized perfect vision for hours. The next morning, I was ecstatic to find out that my vision was completely restored. The specialist questioned whether I was the same girl he had received the fax on, and when I told him I was, he was completely shocked, claiming that I truly was a “Miracle Child.”
Even when I was down to 75 pounds, in a wheelchair relearning how to zip zippers, button buttons, and regain control of my motor skills, I didn’t let it get me down! I was so focused on the goal of being completely healthy that I was driven to succeed, not only achieving my goal, but doing so in record time.
I know without a doubt that my fast recovery came as a result of believing 100% that I would be healed. I focused on my blessings and, in believing that I would be completely healed, adapted an attitude of gratitude instead of victimization. No matter what happens in life, if you choose to be positive and to surround yourself with things that inspire you, make you smile and give you joy, if you visualize your goal in your mind ’s eye and enjoy every minute of it, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
The most important thing I’ve learned is that it’s not what happens to you in your life; it’s your perception of what happens. Your reaction to a situation creates the outcome of it. By believing 100% that you deserve whatever it is you may desire – by seeing it, believing it, and actually feeling as though you have already achieved it – you’ll be amazed at how quickly it becomes your reality.
Don’t underestimate the power of the mind. Focus on what you want to happen in your life and believe with all of your heart that you deserve to have whatever you desire. Then, let go of your fears, focus on faith, and watch how quickly it unfolds in your life!
